Nikon Z8 Field Settings Reference
(Menu-by-Menu)

Z8 Field Setup v2.0 | Updated March 2026

This page documents my Nikon Z8 bird photography field settings for perched birds and birds in flight, based on real field use rather than theory. It covers autofocus, exposure, drive mode, and the custom controls I use to react quickly and keep results consistent.

For the full field-based explanation of why I use these settings, read the blog guide here: Nikon Z8 Bird Photography Settings (Field-Based Configuration)

Note: New Nikon Z8 Guide Available

This page describes the Nikon Z8 bird photography settings I currently use in the field.

I have now published a complete Nikon Z8 Bird Photography Guide, which provides a much more detailed explanation of the camera, including autofocus behaviour, burst shooting, menu configuration and field techniques.

You can read the full guide here:

Nikon Z8 Bird Photography Guide

This page remains available as a quick reference to my own field setup.

Quick Start (my baseline Nikon Z8 bird settings)

  • Exposure: Manual exposure + Auto ISO (shutter and aperture fixed, ISO floats)

  • Shutter speed: 1/1600 as a baseline, 1/2500 to 1/4000 for birds in flight

  • Autofocus: AF-C with bird subject detection available when needed

  • AF area modes: Single-point (default), Auto-area (bird detect), 3D tracking, Wide-area (BIF) on dedicated buttons

  • Drive mode: Continuous high speed (typically 20 fps)

  • File quality: RAW only, neutral in-camera processing (NR, D-Lighting and corrections off)

Full menu-by-menu settings are listed below for reference.

Philosophy First

Wildlife photography rarely gives you time to think. When something happens, the camera needs to respond immediately and predictably, without hesitation or menu diving.

My Z8 is configured around three principles:

  • Separation of focus and exposure

  • Immediate access to different autofocus behaviours

  • Minimal in-camera processing

Every setting on this page exists to support those priorities.

Exposure Strategy

Manual Exposure with Auto ISO

I work primarily in manual exposure with Auto ISO. Shutter speed and aperture are chosen deliberately based on subject behaviour, while ISO is allowed to float to maintain correct exposure.

This approach protects motion first and removes hesitation when birds suddenly take flight.

Image Quality and Processing Choices

RAW Capture and Neutral Files

All images are captured in RAW format. I disable most in-camera processing, including noise reduction, tonal manipulation, and optical corrections.

Those decisions are made later, image by image, rather than applied globally at capture. It keeps files consistent and flexible, particularly for printing.

Autofocus Architecture

A Layered Autofocus System

Rather than relying on a single autofocus mode, I use a layered autofocus setup. Different autofocus behaviours are assigned to specific buttons, so the camera’s response can change instantly without touching the menus.

It makes the camera feel deliberate rather than reactive.

Base Autofocus Mode

Single-point AF is my default state. I use it for precise placement, pre-focusing on known perches, and situations where I want full control without tracking interference.

Subject Detection and Tracking

Auto-area AF with bird detection is used when subjects are isolated or already moving, allowing the camera to track across the frame once focus is initiated.

3D tracking is reserved for perched birds that may move unpredictably or are partially obscured.

Birds in Flight

For birds in flight, I use a custom wide-area AF (L or custom C1/C2) assigned to its own button. It gives the camera room to acquire fast-moving subjects while remaining controlled and predictable.

Button Logic and Muscle Memory

Each button on my camera has a single, clearly defined role. I avoid assigning multiple behaviours to the same control.

This reduces cognitive load and allows muscle memory to take over in fast situations, which matters when photographing wildlife.

Consistency from Capture to Print

This configuration supports a consistent workflow from field capture through editing and print.

By keeping camera output neutral and predictable, creative decisions remain intentional rather than corrective.

A Living Setup

Camera setups are not static. As firmware evolves and my work develops, this configuration may change.

When it does, this page will be updated to reflect what I am actually using in the field, not what I used previously or what is theoretically ideal.

A downloadable reference version of my current Nikon Z8 field settings is available on the members page.
