A3 Print Size in Photography

A3 is one of the most popular print sizes in photography, particularly for fine-art and exhibition-style prints. It offers a strong balance between visual impact and practicality, allowing detail, tone, and subject presence to be appreciated without overwhelming the viewing space.

An A3 photographic print measures 297 × 420 mm (approximately 11.7 × 16.5 inches). This size works well for both portrait and landscape images, providing enough scale to draw the viewer in while remaining suitable for most domestic and studio environments.

Compared with A4, A3 offers greater viewing comfort and finer detail, particularly in images with texture, subtle tonal transitions, or complex subject matter.

For many collectors, A3 represents an ideal first step into fine-art printing. When produced using archival pigment inks on professional fine-art papers, A3 prints retain excellent sharpness, tonal depth, and long-term stability.

Paper & Image Sizes

The paper size and printed image area may differ depending on the format and the natural dimensions of the original photograph.

Key points:

•   Print size refers to the total paper sheet size (A4, A3, A2).
•   The printed image area is centred on the page with an appropriate border.
•   Borders allow for safe handling, framing, and presentation without touching the image area.
•   Landscape and portrait images may produce different aspect ratios within the same paper size.
•   Custom border allowances can be provided if required.

Print Quality & Papers

All prints are produced on Fotospeed fine-art papers chosen for their tone, texture, permanence, and colour consistency. These papers are well-regarded within the fine-art printing community and are matched carefully to each image.

Print Care & Display

To ensure longevity, prints should be handled and displayed with care:

•   Avoid direct, prolonged sunlight.
•   Keep away from high humidity or damp environments.
•   Handle prints by the edges or with clean, dry hands.
•   Use archival-quality mounts and materials when framing.
•   Avoid touching the image surface directly.

Fine-art prints are best enjoyed behind UV-protective glass or acrylic where possible.

Framing & Mount Recommendations

To present your print at its best, consider the following guidelines:

•   Use archival mounts to prevent acid transfer.
•   Choose frame sizes that provide adequate breathing room around the image and mount.
•   Neutral or natural-toned mounts work well for most images.
•   Avoid overly tight framing; allow visual space around the artwork.
•   For A2 prints, professional mounting is recommended due to size.

Suggested frame sizes (approximate):

•   A4 prints: frames around 11" × 14" to 12" × 16"
•   A3 prints: frames around 16" × 20" to 18" × 24"
•   A2 prints: frames around 20" × 28" to 24" × 30"
