Nikon Z8 Autofocus for Wildlife: My New 113-Page Specialist Guide

Introduction
Over the past few months, one subject has appeared repeatedly in questions and feedback from Nikon Z8 photographers: autofocus.
Not simply which AF-area mode to use, but how the different autofocus options work together, where to find them in the Z8 menus, and which settings actually make a difference when photographing wildlife.
That feedback eventually became something rather larger than I originally intended.
Nikon Z8 Autofocus for Wildlife is my new 113-page specialist field guide, devoted entirely to understanding and using the Z8 autofocus system for wildlife photography.
And, in true AYP fashion, it's completely free.
Why I created a specialist autofocus guide
The existing Nikon Z8 resources on my website cover autofocus as part of a much broader approach to setting up and using the camera. But the questions I receive increasingly go beyond simply asking which AF-area mode to select.
People want to know why one mode works better than another, how the different autofocus settings interact, and exactly where to find those settings in the Z8 menus.
Recent feedback from readers reinforced that. There was clearly an appetite for something more detailed and more specialised, particularly if it remained grounded in practical wildlife photography rather than becoming a technical manual.
So I decided to take autofocus apart, setting by setting, and build a guide around the questions I would want answered if I were approaching the Nikon Z8 autofocus system for the first time.
That decision eventually became 113 pages. I may have got slightly carried away. 🤓
What the guide covers
The guide follows the Nikon Z8 autofocus system from the basic choices through to the settings that can make a real difference in the field.
It covers AF-C, AF-area modes, subject detection, 3D-tracking, Auto-area AF, custom Wide-area AF, focus tracking behaviour and autofocus customisation, together with practical suggestions for different wildlife situations.
Just as importantly, I have included menu locations throughout the guide.
That was one of the clearest messages from reader feedback. Knowing that a useful setting exists is not much help if you then have to search through the Z8 menus trying to find it.
Rather than offering a single collection of "best settings", the guide explains what the options do and why I might choose one approach over another.
Because a perched kingfisher, a bird moving through branches and a bird in flight against an open sky rarely require quite the same solution.
Built around real-world wildlife photography
This guide is not intended to replace the Nikon Z8 manual. Nikon already provides the technical reference for what each camera function does.
My aim is different.
The recommendations throughout the guide come from using the Z8 for wildlife photography and considering what happens when the subject does not behave conveniently.
Autofocus settings that work beautifully on a stationary bird may be less suitable when that bird suddenly takes flight. Subject detection can be extremely useful, but there are situations where taking more control of the AF area produces a better result.
That is why the guide concentrates not only on what a setting does, but when and why I would use it.
The objective is not to give you my Z8 setup to copy. It is to help you understand the autofocus system well enough to make your own decisions in the field.

When I asked readers what they wanted from future AYP resources, one of the more surprising responses was that some of you would actually be prepared to pay for more detailed specialist guides.
I considered this reckless suggestion carefully and decided to ignore it. 🤓

Photography is already expensive enough, and I would much rather these guides were being used out in the field than sitting behind a paywall.
