Nikon Z8 Wildlife Video Gear

Ninja - Video Kit

This page documents the complete video setup I use with the Nikon Z8 for wildlife filming, built around the Atomos Ninja monitor-recorder and a growing range of SmallRig power, mounting and rigging components.

The Atomos Ninja remains at the heart of the monitoring and recording system, while SmallRig equipment provides much of the practical framework around it, including camera cages, monitor mounts, V-Mount power and accessory support. Some of this equipment also crosses over into my stills photography setup.

The page covers power, recording media, mounting hardware, cable management and the field workflow considerations that shape how I use the system in practice.

This setup forms part of my wider Nikon Z8 workflow. My Bird Photography Guide covers camera setup, exposure, autofocus and field techniques, while this page concentrates specifically on building and using the Z8 as a practical wildlife video system.

Atomos Ninja

The Atomos Ninja forms the core of my external monitoring and recording system. Its bright 5-inch display gives me a much clearer view of exposure, fine detail and critical focus than the camera's rear screen, particularly when working from a hide or with long lenses.

Tools such as focus peaking, waveform monitoring and exposure aids are useful when preparing a sequence and help maintain consistency when lighting or wildlife behaviour changes.

For recording, I use a 2TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD mounted in an Atomos Master Caddy, providing ample capacity for extended 4K recording sessions.

What Comes in the Box

Atomos Ninja

The standard retail package includes the following core components:

•   Ninja 5-inch monitor-recorder

•   1 × Atomos Master Caddy II

•   Basic AC mains power supply

•   Quickstart documentation

This package is suitable for studio or desk use but is not configured for fieldwork. It does not include batteries, chargers, SSDs, mounting hardware, or HDMI cables. For wildlife filming and extended outdoor sessions, additional power, media, and mounting components are required.

Additional Accessories I Use

To convert the Ninja into a reliable, field-ready monitoring and recording system, I have added the following components.

Power

Atomos Universal Power Kit

The Atomos Universal Power Kit includes two NP-F batteries, a charger, D-Tap cable and protective case. I use it as a straightforward dedicated power solution for the Ninja, particularly during longer hide sessions where frequent battery changes would be disruptive.

USB-C Power Delivery Cable (PD 3.1, 240 W, USB-C to USB-C)

A high-capacity USB-C cable used with compatible PD power sources to power the Nikon Z8 and other equipment in the field. It is particularly useful during extended wildlife sessions, video recording and timelapse work where maintaining power for longer periods is important.

SmallRig VB99 SE Mini V-Mount Battery, 99Wh / 65W (4823)

I use two VB99 SE batteries as compact field power sources for monitors, recorders and other accessories. Their 99Wh capacity provides a useful balance between running time, size and weight, while multiple outputs, including D-Tap and USB-C, make it easier to power several parts of the rig without relying on separate battery systems.

SmallRig X99 V-Mount Battery, 99Wh / 100W (4984)

The X99 provides a higher-output option for the video rig while remaining compact enough for field use. I use it where I want a single V-Mount battery to support several devices, helping reduce battery changes and simplify power management during longer recording sessions.

Media and Data

Samsung 870 EVO 2TB SSD

This drive serves as the primary recording medium inside the Atomos caddy. Its capacity and reliability make it well suited to extended 4K recording sessions.

Angelbird USB-C to SATA Adapter

A fast and reliable adapter for transferring footage from the SSD to a computer. It supports quick backups and efficient file management at the end of a session, while also assisting with firmware updates.

Mounting and Rigging

SmallRig Night Eagle Cage Kit for Nikon Z8 (4317)

The Night Eagle kit expands the Z8 into a more complete video rig while still allowing normal access to the camera controls and connections.

The kit includes the full camera cage, top handle, removable cold shoe mount and HDMI/USB-C cable clamp. The top handle is useful when carrying or repositioning the assembled rig, while the cable clamp provides additional protection for the camera's connections when HDMI and USB-C cables are fitted.

For wildlife video, it provides a solid framework on which the monitor, microphone, power system and other accessories can be mounted securely.

SmallRig Adjustable Monitor Mount, ARRI-Style 3/8"

This compact metal mount provides a rigid connection between the Atomos Ninja and the camera cage. The locating pins help prevent the mount rotating under load, while the adjustable joint allows the monitor angle to be set precisely for tripod, hide or lower-level shooting.

Once tightened, the monitor remains securely positioned, which is particularly important when working with a relatively heavy recorder and cabling attached.

SmallRig HawkLock H21 Quick-Release Monitor Mount

The HawkLock H21 gives me a quicker way of attaching and removing the monitor when I do not need the complete video setup. Rather than dismantling the mounting hardware each time, the monitor can be released from the rig while leaving the main mounting point in position.

That makes the setup considerably more practical when moving between still photography and video in the field.

SmallRig Compact V-Mount Battery Mounting System (4064B)

The foldable V-Mount plate provides a secure mounting point for the VB99 SE and X99 batteries while keeping the power source close to the camera rig.

Its Arca-Swiss mounting arrangement makes the battery position easier to adjust and helps keep the centre of gravity under control as equipment is added or removed. The plate can also fold when required, making the complete system easier to transport and reconfigure.

SmallRig Universal Metal Phone Support with Cold Shoe Mount (4382)

I also carry the SmallRig phone support as part of the video kit. It provides a secure way of mounting a smartphone to the rig when required for reference material, remote-control functions or other supporting tasks without adding a separate stand or support.

Cables

HDMI 8K/4K Down-Angled Spiral Cable (50 cm)

A compact, strain-relieving full-size HDMI cable chosen specifically to keep the rig tidy and protected. The down-angled connector routes the cable close to the camera body, reducing leverage on the HDMI port and minimising the risk of accidental disconnection.

The spiral design allows enough flexibility for adjustment while avoiding excess slack. This helps maintain a clean, compact setup, particularly when working from a tripod for extended periods.

Audio

RØDE VideoMic NTG

Directional on-camera shotgun microphone used for capturing ambient wildlife sound and close-range audio. Chosen for its low noise floor, strong directionality, and suitability for outdoor field work.

How I Use This Kit in the Field

The technical components above only matter if they improve field performance. In practice, the setup supports my workflow in the following ways:

This monitor-recorder setup plays an important role in my wildlife workflow, particularly when working in low light, static positions, and situations where precision matters more than speed.

Clearer Detail in Low Light

The bright Ninja screen makes it easier to assess exposure and fine detail in shaded woodland, overcast conditions, and early morning light. In these situations, the rear camera screen can be difficult to judge accurately, especially when subtle tonal differences matter.

Greater Confidence in Focus

Long-lens wildlife work often relies on extremely precise focus, where even small errors can be difficult to spot on a small screen. The larger display and focus tools make fine adjustments easier to see, reducing the likelihood of focus errors before recording begins.

Longer, Uninterrupted Recording

With both NP-F and V-Mount power available, the monitor and supporting equipment can run for much longer periods without frequent battery changes. Combined with SSD recording, this is particularly useful when wildlife behaviour develops unpredictably and interrupting a sequence could mean missing the important moment.

More Comfortable Monitoring

Mounting the screen securely above the camera provides a more natural and comfortable viewing angle when working from a tripod. This reduces strain during long sessions in hides or static positions, making it easier to stay focused and attentive over extended periods.

How This Setup Fits My Workflow

This Nikon Z8 video configuration combines the Atomos Ninja with SmallRig mounting and power components to create a practical field system for monitoring, recording and managing video more reliably.

As video becomes a more integrated part of my wildlife work, this setup provides consistency and confidence during long sessions.
