When Your Memory Card Gets Hot: Understanding CFexpress Overheating Without the Panic

It is one of those moments that can make your heart sink.


You've just finished photographing a fast sequence. Perhaps a kingfisher has dived, a dragonfly has hovered perfectly in front of the lens or a kestrel has folded its wings into a dive. The camera has been firing continuously and the buffer has only just cleared.


You lower the camera, glance at the rear screen and notice a temperature warning.


Almost immediately the questions begin.


Is my memory card overheating?


Could it damage the camera?


Should I take the card out?


Am I about to lose all of today's photographs?


The good news is that, in most cases, the answer is no.


As cameras have become faster and capable of recording huge amounts of data, memory cards have had to evolve just as quickly. Today's CFexpress Type B cards are remarkably powerful pieces of technology, and with that performance comes something photographers rarely had to think about in the days of SD cards: heat.


Understanding why these cards become warm, what the warnings actually mean and when you genuinely need to take action can remove a lot of unnecessary anxiety.


More than just a memory card


Although we still call them memory cards, a modern CFexpress Type B card has far more in common with the solid-state drive inside your computer than it does with the SD cards many of us used for years.

Like any processor, the harder it works, the warmer it becomes.


That is entirely normal.


The camera contributes too


The memory card isn't generating all of that heat by itself.


It sits inside a compact, weather-sealed body alongside the image sensor, image processor, battery and image stabilisation system, all of which produce heat during intensive shooting.


On a warm summer's afternoon, the internal temperature of the camera naturally increases. The card then absorbs some of that heat while simultaneously generating its own.


It's a combination that explains why a card can feel surprisingly warm after a long wildlife session.


Why some cards appear to run cooler than others


One of the most common questions on photography forums is which CFexpress card runs the coolest.


The answer isn't as straightforward as many people expect.


Different manufacturers use different controllers, firmware and flash memory.


These all influence how efficiently a card handles power and manages temperature.


Some cards prioritise maximum sustained write speeds.

Neither approach is necessarily better. They are simply different engineering decisions.


For me, reliability has always been more important than chasing benchmark figures.

What does the temperature warning actually mean?


This is where many photographers become unnecessarily worried.


A temperature warning is not a failure warning.


Modern cameras constantly monitor internal temperatures. If a component approaches a predefined operating threshold, the camera alerts you before damage can occur.


Think of it as an early warning system rather than an emergency.


The camera is effectively saying:


"I'm getting warmer than usual. Keep an eye on me."


It is not saying:


"Your photographs are in danger."


These warnings are designed to protect the camera and the memory card long before permanent damage becomes a possibility.


When should you take notice?


A brief temperature warning after sustained shooting is often perfectly normal.


You may see one after:


  • Extended RAW bursts

  • Long periods of 4K or 8K video recording

  • Shooting in direct sunlight

  • Working in very warm weather


If the warning disappears after a short rest and the camera continues operating normally, there is usually little cause for concern.


However, it is worth stopping to allow the equipment to cool if:


  • The warning remains on for an extended period.

  • Camera performance becomes restricted.

  • Video recording stops because of temperature limits.

  • The card becomes uncomfortably hot to handle.

  • Warnings occur repeatedly during relatively light use.


If that happens regularly, it may be worth investigating further or trying another card.


Should you remove the card immediately?


My advice is simple.


No.


If the camera is still writing images, removing the card introduces a far greater risk than allowing it to cool naturally.


Always wait until the access light has stopped flashing before switching the camera off.


Then simply allow everything to cool at its own pace.


There is no advantage in rushing.


Can you reduce overheating?


You cannot eliminate heat completely, but you can reduce the chances of seeing a warning.


Some simple habits make a noticeable difference.


  • Avoid leaving the camera in direct sunlight between sessions.

  • Give the camera a short break after particularly long bursts.

  • Use high-quality CFexpress cards from reputable manufacturers.

  • Keep your camera firmware up to date.

  • Avoid filling cards completely before transferring images.

  • Carry a second card so you can rotate them during intensive shooting.


None of these are difficult, but together they help reduce thermal stress.


My experience in the field


The Nikon Z8 has become my primary wildlife camera, and I regularly push it hard.


Whether I'm photographing kingfishers, birds of prey or insects, it isn't unusual to shoot prolonged bursts of high-resolution RAW files.


During particularly busy sessions, especially in warmer weather, I've occasionally seen a card temperature warning.


On the occasions I've seen a temperature warning, I've treated it as exactly that, a warning rather than a reason to panic. A short break has allowed the camera to cool, after which I've simply carried on with the session.


That doesn't mean overheating should be ignored, but it does reinforce an important point.


Modern cameras are incredibly sophisticated computers inside compact, weather-sealed bodies. Heat is an inevitable consequence of the performance we now expect.


The warning is usually evidence that the camera is protecting itself exactly as Nikon intended.


Final thoughts


When photographers first encounter a memory card temperature warning, it's easy to assume something has gone wrong.


In reality, most warnings are simply part of the camera's normal thermal management.


Understanding the difference between a precautionary warning and a genuine fault allows you to keep shooting with confidence rather than reacting unnecessarily.


For me, the lesson is straightforward.


Respect the warning, but don't panic.


Give the camera time to cool if needed, invest in reliable memory cards and trust the protection systems built into modern cameras.


After all, I'd much rather spend my time watching the next kingfisher return to its perch than worrying about a memory card that's simply doing exactly what it was designed to do.
